Mobilisation pro-Palestine contre l’arraisonnement de la Flotille Sumud, 2 octobre à Bruxelles

“We were a gathering at the Bourse and started to move together towards the Parliament to join another bigger gathering. When arriving at the corner of rue de l’Ommegang and rue du Meiboom, police vans and officer where blocking the street of Meiboom and threw tear gas. The group started to run backways and tried to go another way through rue du Marais.

There another van and officers where came blocking the end of the street when we arrived. They started to push us back yelling to go away « Cassez-vous ! », « Barrez-vous ! » and started to walk in line toward us while hitting their sticks on their shields. We all turned back immediately, walking fast, some running. They followed us and other officers came from rue de l’Ommegang, pushing us towards rue du Canon. When we were in rue de la Blanchisserie they started hitting with the sticks and violently pushing the people at the back of the group. I found myself at the back at this moment because I was pushing my bike so couldn’t run as fast. We were all walking really fast and being straight behind the group so we couldn’t go faster because the street was clogged with people but the officers kept screaming agressively to go faster and would sometimes start to sprint toward some of us to hit us.

I saw somebody who was throwing bins and scooter on the road who a bit later pulled his stick out and started bitting out people with other plainclothes officers.

Apart from this guy there was maybe one or two other people who threw a bin (maybe other plainclothes officers?) on the road but most of us were just running away without any other action towards the officers or the street.

They would come from our back and hit us while we were running away. One officer kept screaming to the others « Guys calm down ! » and « Doucement les gars ! ». My friend was hit on the hip by an officer who then was pulled off by another telling him « Chill out ! », « Tranquille ! ». The plainclothes officers where the most violent and would run in a group to hit the same person. They seemed to be hitting more and harder the people that had face covers and going for those who looked the more activist (wearing keffieh, covers…).

I heard a few racialised people screaming they were hit. We were still running at the back with our bikes with my friend, getting into rue des Oeillets. The officers line was following us from maybe 20 metres away, when an officer sprinted towards us and shooted extremely violently in their bike wheel, the back of the bike flew in the air. He then did the same but less hard with my bike before grasping my right arm and hitting with all his strenght the top of my arm with his stick two times while screaming « Fuck away ! », « Cassez-vous ! » (which I was already doing as fast as I could).

At this time they used pepper spray and our eyes began to burn. Nobody was resisting we where all running away. A few people started filming the scenes. We arrived on place des Martyrs and as it was larger there we spreaded out and could run away faster. We managed to escape with my friends to leave back home.”
